The preparations for the 39th National Games 2027 received a major boost as Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya chaired a high-level review meeting in Meghalaya to assess the state's readiness to host India's premier multi-sport event. The meeting underscored the Government of India's commitment to transforming the National Games into not only a sporting spectacle but also a platform to showcase the cultural richness, diversity, and growing sporting excellence of the North Eastern region.
The review meeting brought together key stakeholders, including Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports Raksha Khadse, Indian Olympic Association President P.T. Usha, Meghalaya Sports Minister Wailadmiki Shylla, sports officials from all eight North Eastern states, and senior officers from the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.
The discussions focused on infrastructure development, venue readiness, athlete preparation, sustainability initiatives, volunteer engagement, and long-term sports development strategies aimed at ensuring that the National Games 2027 become one of the most successful editions in the history of the event.
National Games as a Showcase of Northeast India
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya emphasized that the vision for the 39th National Games extends beyond athletic competition.
He stated that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Games should become a national platform to present Meghalaya’s rich traditions, indigenous heritage, cultural diversity, and natural beauty to both domestic and international audiences.
According to the Union Minister, hosting the National Games offers Meghalaya a unique opportunity to position itself as a major sporting destination while simultaneously promoting tourism, cultural exchange, and regional development.
He stressed that world-class infrastructure, efficient event management, and active community participation would be essential in making the Games a landmark event for Indian sports.
Sustainability and Diversity at the Core
Highlighting the broader objectives of the Games, Dr. Mandaviya announced that “Sustainability and Diversity” would serve as the central themes of the 39th National Games.
The Minister emphasized the importance of adopting environmentally responsible practices in event planning and execution, ensuring that the Games leave a positive legacy for future generations.
He noted that Meghalaya’s unique ecological environment and cultural heritage provide an ideal setting to demonstrate how major sporting events can be organized sustainably while celebrating local traditions and community participation.
Officials indicated that sustainability measures will be integrated into venue development, waste management, transportation planning, and event operations.
National Games as a Talent Identification Platform
Dr. Mandaviya observed that growing interest among states in hosting major sporting events reflects the expanding sports culture across India.
He emphasized that the National Games should not only identify medal winners but also function as a comprehensive talent scouting and athlete development platform.
According to the Minister, the event presents an opportunity to discover emerging talent from across the country and integrate promising athletes into national development programmes.
Talent identification at the grassroots level remains a key priority for the Government’s sports development strategy, particularly as India prepares for future international competitions and Olympic campaigns.
The National Games, he noted, can play a crucial role in strengthening the athlete pipeline and expanding opportunities for young sportspersons.
Strong Focus on Anti-Doping Awareness
The Union Sports Minister also highlighted the need to strengthen anti-doping education among athletes participating in the Games.
He stressed that awareness regarding the dangers and consequences of doping must become an integral part of sports development initiatives.
According to Dr. Mandaviya, athletes should be educated about the physical, ethical, and competitive implications of using prohibited substances.
He urged sports administrators and organizers to use the National Games as a platform for promoting clean sport and reinforcing the values of fair competition and integrity.
The emphasis on anti-doping awareness aligns with India’s broader efforts to strengthen compliance with international sporting standards and protect athlete welfare.
MY Bharat Volunteers to Play Key Role
Recognizing the importance of youth participation, Dr. Mandaviya proposed the engagement of volunteers from MY Bharat, the Government’s flagship youth development initiative.
These volunteers are expected to support various aspects of event management, logistics, hospitality, public outreach, and athlete services during the Games.
The involvement of youth volunteers will not only contribute to the smooth conduct of the event but also provide valuable learning experiences and opportunities for civic engagement.
Officials believe that volunteer participation will help create a stronger connection between communities and the sporting event while fostering a culture of youth leadership and national service.
Comprehensive Review of Sports Infrastructure
A major focus of the review meeting was the progress of sports infrastructure projects across Meghalaya and the wider North Eastern region.
Officials presented detailed updates on venue construction, facility upgrades, accommodation arrangements, transportation planning, and other preparatory activities related to the National Games.
The review included assessments of:
-
Stadium development
-
Indoor sports facilities
-
Athlete training centres
-
Accommodation infrastructure
-
Transportation connectivity
-
Event management readiness
The Union Minister emphasized the need for timely completion of all projects while maintaining the highest standards of quality and functionality.
He directed officials to closely monitor implementation timelines and address any bottlenecks that could affect readiness for the Games.
New Multipurpose Indoor Sports Hall Inaugurated
During his three-day visit to the Northeast, Dr. Mandaviya inaugurated a state-of-the-art Multipurpose Integrated Sports Indoor Hall in Shillong.
The modern facility is expected to significantly enhance sports infrastructure in Meghalaya and provide local athletes with access to advanced training and competition facilities.
The Minister stated that the new indoor hall will create fresh opportunities for young sportspersons and contribute to the long-term development of the sporting ecosystem in the state.
The facility is designed to support multiple disciplines and serve as an important venue for both training and competitive events.
Officials believe that such infrastructure investments are critical for nurturing talent and expanding sports participation across the region.
Meghalaya to Get World-Class High-Altitude Training Centre
One of the most significant announcements made during the visit was the establishment of a world-class high-altitude training centre in Meghalaya.
Dr. Mandaviya revealed that the facility, with an estimated investment of ₹150 crore, will be developed in the state in the near future.
High-altitude training centres are regarded as essential assets for elite athlete development because they enable sportspersons to improve endurance, cardiovascular performance, and competitive readiness under scientifically managed conditions.
The proposed centre is expected to attract athletes from across India and potentially from other countries, further strengthening Meghalaya’s position as an emerging sports hub.
The facility will complement existing sports infrastructure and contribute to the state’s growing reputation in athlete development and sports science.
Praising Meghalaya’s Sports Transformation
The Union Sports Minister commended Chief Minister Conrad Sangma for his efforts to strengthen the sports ecosystem in Meghalaya over the past eight years.
According to Dr. Mandaviya, the state government has adopted a comprehensive and forward-looking approach to sports development.
He highlighted several areas of progress, including:
-
Sports science integration
-
Modern training methodologies
-
Talent identification programmes
-
Grassroots sports development
-
Infrastructure expansion
-
Athlete support initiatives
The Minister observed that Meghalaya has emerged as an example for other states through its systematic efforts to build a sustainable and inclusive sports ecosystem.
Northeast Emerging as India’s Sporting Powerhouse
Dr. Mandaviya emphasized the growing importance of the North Eastern region in India’s sporting landscape.
The region has consistently produced outstanding athletes across disciplines, including boxing, weightlifting, football, archery, athletics, and combat sports.
He stated that Meghalaya’s selection as host for the National Games is a matter of pride not only for the state but for the entire nation.
Hosting the Games, he said, will provide additional momentum to sports development in the Northeast while showcasing the region’s talent, hospitality, culture, and potential to the rest of India.
Government’s Strong Commitment to Northeast Sports Development
Highlighting the Centre’s focused investment in the region, Dr. Mandaviya noted that although the Northeast accounts for only around 4 percent of India’s population, it hosts nearly 25 percent of all Khelo India Centres in the country.
He explained that this demonstrates the Government’s commitment to unlocking the region’s vast sporting potential.
While many districts elsewhere in India operate a single Khelo India Centre, several districts in the Northeast have been provided with two centres to ensure broader access to training, coaching, and athlete development opportunities.
This targeted approach reflects the recognition that the Northeast possesses exceptional sporting talent that deserves sustained support and investment.
A New Benchmark for Indian Sports
Following the review of preparations, Dr. Mandaviya expressed confidence that the 39th National Games would set new standards for organization, infrastructure, athlete participation, and public engagement.
He stated that the progress achieved so far indicates that Meghalaya is well-positioned to host an event that will leave a lasting legacy for sports development in the region.
Beyond the competition itself, the Games are expected to generate economic opportunities, strengthen tourism, improve infrastructure, and inspire a new generation of athletes across the Northeast.
As preparations continue over the coming months, the 39th National Games 2027 are increasingly being viewed as a transformative opportunity for Meghalaya and a significant milestone in India’s sporting journey.
