Youth Congress Advocates for National Legal Framework for Gig Workers' Protection

The Indian Youth Congress has launched a national campaign demanding legislative protection for gig workers. Millions of individuals employed by online delivery platforms face consistent challenges, including low pay and a lack of social security.

During the 'Gig Workers' Nyay Campaign' conclave at the All India Congress Committee headquarters in Delhi, gig workers shared their grievances. Indian Youth Congress president Uday Bhanu Chib insisted on a national legal framework to protect these workers, emphasizing the inadequacy of relying solely on state laws.

Chib urged for a unified approach, akin to existing laws in Karnataka and Telangana. He highlighted the reality that many rely on gigs as their primary income source, facing long hours without adequate protections. The organisation reported widespread dissatisfaction among workers over issues like unstable accounts and insufficient insurance coverage.

With NITI Aayog's estimates predicting a sharp rise in gig workers from an existing seven million, the Indian Youth Congress argues for comprehensive national legislation to ensure fair treatment and secure working conditions.
