Reports by the Wall Street Journal suggest that under the direction of US intelligence head Tulsi Gabbard, American agencies have been instructed to investigate Greenland's movement towards independence and its opinions on US resource extraction interests. In response, Denmark has called on the top US diplomat in the country for an explanation.

Prime Minister Frederiksen criticized these reports, labeling them as mere 'rumours' published by an international newspaper. The Wall Street Journal based its story on two unidentified sources familiar with the situation.
