In a decisive victory for the Trinamool Congress (TMC), Alifa Ahamed has emerged as the leader in the by-election for the Kaliganj assembly seat in West Bengal's Nadia district. After 13 rounds of counting, she secured 59,329 votes, outpacing her nearest rival from the BJP, Ashis Ghosh, who garnered 29,580 votes. The Congress candidate, backed by CPI(M), fell to third with 19,516 votes.
The election process began on Monday morning at 8 am with the counting of postal ballots and proceeded peacefully, according to officials. TMC's dominance reflects a significant win under the leadership of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who expressed heartfelt gratitude to the electorate of Kaliganj.
Banerjee attributed the victory to the support from people of all communities and dedicated it to the motherland and the late MLA Nasiruddin Ahmed. The bypoll, held on Thursday, recorded a 69.85% voter turnout, with minimal disruptions reported. This electoral contest was a result of the sudden demise of sitting TMC MLA Nasiruddin Ahmed earlier this year, prompting the party to field his daughter, Alifa, to retain the seat.
