The resilience of the Awami League in Bangladesh is being debated as discussions arise about the potential for Sheikh Hasina to make a political comeback. Veteran journalist Manash Ghosh argues that both the party and the deposed leader have historically overcome severe situations and could do so again.
The political landscape in Bangladesh has drastically shifted since the mass protests in 2024 that resulted in the ousting of the Awami League government and Prime Minister Hasina. An interim government led by Muhammad Yunus has since taken control, and the Awami League is currently banned under anti-terrorism laws.
Despite these setbacks, Ghosh insists that the party's deep roots in Bangladeshi society will not allow it to be permanently removed from the political scene. He suggests that a change in leadership approaches and policy reforms are essential for a successful return to power.
