Federal Probe into Duke University Highlights Race Discrimination Allegations
The Trump administration is investigating Duke University and its law journal for alleged race-related discrimination in selecting editors, amid threats to cut federal funding. This follows broader scrutiny of university policies affecting race, highlighting tensions between government oversight and academic freedoms.

The Trump administration has announced an investigation into Duke University and the Duke Law Journal over allegations of race-based discrimination in its selection process for journal editors. This marks the university as the latest to face the threat of federal funding cuts due to alleged discriminatory practices.
According to the U.S. Education Department, the investigation stems from reports accusing Duke of discriminatory practices based on race, color, and national origin in its law journal membership selection. In a letter sent by U.S. Education Secretary Linda McMahon and Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the administration called for a review of the university's policies to resolve purported civil rights violations.
While Duke University has yet to comment, the situation has ignited discussions over free speech and academic freedoms, especially as the government has also targeted other policies including climate initiatives, diversity programs, and political protests in academic settings. Concurrently, Harvard University faces similar scrutiny, challenging government actions in court.
