Government Pushes Bills Amid Parliamentary Disruptions

The government is set to advance its legislative agenda in Parliament despite ongoing disruptions led by the Opposition over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar. Minister of Parliamentary Affairs Kiren Rijiju emphasized that passing key bills is in the 'national interest.'

On Monday, legislative proceedings were at a standstill in the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha, in part due to the adjournment following the death of member and former Jharkhand chief minister Shibu Soren. The government's planned agenda, including discussions on the National Sports Governance Bill and the National Anti-Doping Bill, could not proceed.

Rijiju criticized the Opposition for reneging on a prior agreement for discussion, stating that the debate over SIR cannot occur in Parliament as it is an administrative matter of the Election Commission. He reiterated that Parliament could discuss electoral reforms but not the functioning of constitutional bodies like the EC.
