CBDT Debunks Claims of Action Against Tamil Nadu Congress Leader

The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has officially refuted claims made by Tamil Nadu Congress Committee President, K Selvaperunthagai, regarding an alleged search and enforcement action against him. On Tuesday, the CBDT described the allegations as 'entirely baseless and factually incorrect.'

Selvaperunthagai alleged via a social media post on April 20, 2026, that Income Tax Department officials unlawfully confined him within his constituency, thus preventing him from fulfilling his political duties. This claim was reiterated during his media interactions and led to media reports of an IT search at his residence in Kilpauk, Chennai.

According to the CBDT's press release, no such search, survey, or enforcement action occurred against Selvaperunthagai, nor were any premises related to him covered under Income Tax proceedings. The CBDT did conduct limited verification exercises in Sriperumbudur, but these were unrelated to him and garnered no actionable findings. Consequently, a formal complaint has been filed with both the Election Commission of India and the Commissioner of Police, Chennai, implicating him in spreading false information about government actions.
