In a historic show of civic participation, Tamil Nadu witnessed a remarkable turnout in its Assembly elections, shattering past records. Over 80% of the state's 5.73 crore voters exercised their democratic right on Thursday as they headed to the polls to elect representatives for 234 constituencies.
The Election Commission of India reported that by 5 pm, the state had recorded a staggering voting percentage of 82.24. This turnout exceeded the previous high of 78.29% from the 2011 elections, which were dominantly won by the AIADMK.
Intense competition highlighted the voting landscape in key districts. Salem district led with 88.02% voter turnout, while Chennai, home to political heavyweights like DMK President and Chief Minister M K Stalin, saw 81.34%. Other notable turnouts included Coimbatore at 82.33% and Tiruchirappalli at 82.76%.
