In a fervent address at the Nagpur Press Club, Congress Legislature party leader Vijay Wadettiwar labeled the recent defeat of the women's quota bill in the Lok Sabha as a 'complete eyewash' and a direct assault on democratic principles. The bill aimed to increase Lok Sabha seats, enabling a 33% quota for women in legislative bodies before the 2029 elections.
Wadettiwar accused Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis of reversing his stance on the bill under pressure from higher authorities. He claimed the BJP's strategy was to gain female sympathy and tarnish the Congress's image, but expressed confidence that the campaign would ultimately fail.
The controversy extends to a recent EC notice to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge for remarks against Prime Minister Modi. Wadettiwar criticized the perceived double standards, questioning why previous offensive remarks from BJP members had not been similarly addressed.
