In a heated debate over language rules for rickshaw drivers in Maharashtra, Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Nirupam has spoken out against punitive measures targeting non-Marathi-speaking drivers. While acknowledging the state's objective to promote Marathi, Nirupam criticized threats of permit cancellations as excessive, advocating instead for opportunities for drivers to learn the language.
The controversy follows a statement by Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) leader Amit Thackeray, who issued a stern warning to those opposing the Marathi language mandate. Thackeray cautioned rickshaw drivers contemplating strikes against any attempts to target Marathi-speaking drivers, pledging swift retaliation.
Adding to the discourse, MNS spokesperson Sandeep Deshpande emphasized the necessity for drivers to respect local languages. The ongoing tensions coincide with State Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik's declaration that proficiency in Marathi will soon be a prerequisite for rickshaw permits, beginning May 1.
