Sherman Ali Ahmed, the sole Trinamool Congress representative in the Assam Assembly, exited a session in disapproval of the Uniform Civil Code Bill. He accused the ruling BJP-led NDA of promoting the bill with ill-intent, alleging it violates Fundamental Rights.
Ahmed acknowledged merits in the Bill, such as guidelines on marital age and live-in arrangements, but insisted that broader discussions are necessary. While supporting a uniform law on personal issues like marriage and divorce, Ahmed challenged the exclusion of Assam's Scheduled Tribes and criticized the requirement for live-in registration. The Bill suggests severe penalties for bigamy and non-registration of live-in partnerships.
