In a display of political tensions, the Congress has denounced an alleged assault on TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee in Sonarpur, West Bengal. According to the party, the inadequate police presence during the incident points to BJP's tactics of vendetta against opposition leaders.

Banerjee was reportedly attacked by locals as he visited the area to support families affected by recent post-electoral violence. Eyewitnesses claimed that stones, shoes, and eggs were thrown at him as verbal insults echoed. Despite the aggression, Banerjee vowed to remain at the scene until police secured the area.

Reacting to the incident, Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge criticized the security failure, urging the government to ensure the safety of political figures. Meanwhile, BJP's state president, Samik Bhattacharya, suggested that local discontent could have led to the clash.
