Eight lives have been tragically lost after a pickup vehicle plunged into the Sirhind canal near Jagera bridge in Punjab's Ludhiana district, according to local police reports on Monday.

The unfortunate event occurred on Sunday night as nearly 30 devotees were journeying back from the Mata Naina Devi temple in Himachal Pradesh. Reports indicate that the driver lost control while attempting to overtake another vehicle, leading to the accident.

The tragedy claimed the lives of four women and three children, as confirmed by Deputy Superintendent of Police, Payal, Hemant Malhotra. Rescue operations led by Deputy Commissioner Himanshu Jain and Senior Superintendent of Police Jyoti Yadav saved many, but the death toll rose to eight with the recovery of two more bodies.
