More than half of tiger deaths in India from 2021 to 2025 have occurred beyond protected reserves, according to government data. Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh account for the highest number of these fatalities.

The National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) reported 667 tiger deaths between 2021 and 2025, with 341 occurring outside reserves. Yearly data highlights fluctuating numbers, with alarming figures of tiger deaths outside reserves consistently recorded across various states.

In response to the escalating human-tiger conflict, the government is set to introduce the Tigers Outside Tiger Reserves (TOTR) project, encompassing 80 forest divisions across 17 states to mitigate the problem.
