The discovery of a dead lioness on the outskirts of Mandardi village in Gujarat's Amreli district has caused significant concern among local leaders and citizens. Some worry that a severe virus outbreak could be threatening the Asiatic lion population, which is native to the Gir region.
Although the forest department has attributed the lioness's death to natural causes, authorities are urged to investigate the possibility of a virus similar to the canine distemper virus (CDV), which has previously affected the lion population. Local MLA J V Kakadiya has highlighted the issue and called for immediate attention from the forest minister.
The Deputy Conservator of Forests Dhananjay Sahu reported that two cubs recently found weak in the Jafrabad range died due to natural reasons like anemia and pneumonia. Despite ongoing concerns, the forest department has taken preventive measures, ensuring no viral infections currently threaten the lions.
