Delhi's Asola Bhatti Wildlife Sanctuary has achieved a substantial milestone in wildlife conservation, marking the successful breeding of an Indian Flapshell turtle hatchling within its ecosystem.
The turtle, protected under Schedule 1 of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972 and listed as 'Vulnerable' by IUCN, highlights the sanctuary's improved ecological conditions, according to Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa.
Various efforts, including the introduction of sand beds, optimal water level maintenance, and creation of a micro-ecosystem resembling natural habitats, have enhanced breeding success and set ABWS as a model for turtle conservation.
