In a significant development following the flash floods in Uttarkashi's Harsil area, teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and other agencies successfully managed to puncture and drain a temporary lake, significantly reducing its water level and safeguarding downstream communities.
The crisis began when a local stream, Telgad, was activated by the August 5 floods, accumulating water and debris to form an alluvial fan which obstructed the Bhagirathi River and led to the lake's formation. The situation posed a serious threat to settlements downstream.
After 10 days of anxious monitoring, experts from various agencies, including the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and Uttarakhand Jal Vidyut Nigam Limited (UJVNL), collaborated to dig a canal, facilitating controlled drainage of the lake, thus averting potential disaster.
