The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a 'red alert' for Mumbai and nearby districts, predicting extremely heavy rainfall that has led to the declaration of a holiday for all educational institutions by the city civic body. The ongoing deluge has disrupted daily activities, including air travel and local transport.
According to officials, nine flights had to conduct go-arounds before landing, while one was diverted due to poor conditions at Mumbai Airport. The rains have inundated roads, affecting traffic and visibility. Meanwhile, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has appealed to the public to stay indoors unless absolutely necessary.
The heavy rainfall is attributed to a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal along with cyclonic circulations. Suburban train services have been delayed, though not halted, due to waterlogging. The IMD has also issued warnings to fishermen against venturing into the Arabian Sea during this severe weather episode.
