Deluge in Southern Odisha: Life Disrupted Amid Heavy Rainfall

In Southern Odisha, torrential rains have thrown life into disarray. Districts including Malkangiri, Nabarangpur, Gajapati, and Koraput bore the brunt as bridges submerged, roads flooded, and critical transportation links, such as the Malkangiri-Motu-Jeypore National Highway, became impassable. The sustained downpour over the past two days has left many low-lying areas under water.

Local authorities scrambled to prevent any loss of life or property. Emergency teams, including the Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force, were on high alert, prepared for evacuations and other contingencies. Additionally, the region witnessed partial infrastructural collapse, with the Malkangiri airport's boundary wall succumbing to the heavy rains.

The Indian Meteorological Department forecasts continued heavy rainfall until Tuesday afternoon, with warnings issued for extremely heavy showers in specific districts. Fishermen have been advised against venturing into rough seas, with further advisories expected as the low-pressure system intensifies into a potential depression.
