Poland's Bold Move: Submarine Acquisition to Fortify Military and NATO Ties
Poland is set to finalize its decision on submarine procurement this week, aiming to purchase three new submarines by year-end as part of its military modernization. The initiative under the "Orka" programme seeks to strengthen ties with NATO amidst growing Russian threats. Offers from Germany, Italy, and Sweden are leading contenders.

Poland is on the brink of a significant military upgrade, as the country prepares to finalize its decision on submarine procurement within the week. Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced that three new submarines would be purchased by the end of the year as part of the "Orka" programme. This initiative aims to boost Poland's military capabilities and strengthen its alignment with NATO.
This move comes in response to perceived threats from Russia following its invasion of Ukraine in 2022. With offers from Germany, Italy, and Sweden emerging as frontrunners, the Polish government is reviewing these bids to select a partner for this multi-billion-dollar programme.
Recent developments also highlighted a Memorandum of Understanding between Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri and the Polish Armaments Group (PGZ) to support the naval modernization efforts. Additionally, South Korean shipbuilder Hanwha Ocean has added financial incentives to its proposal, increasing the competition for Poland's submarine contract.
