In an effort to address the harsh realities faced by urban workers in Mumbai, the Youth Congress launched the 'Urban Workers Justice' campaign on Saturday. This initiative aims to secure a minimum wage of Rs 100 per hour for domestic workers, addressing the exploitation faced by the unorganized labor sector in the city.
Mumbai Youth Congress president, Zeenat Shabrin, voiced concerns over the government's negligence in providing fundamental rights and social security to sanitation workers, autorickshaw drivers, and street vendors. The campaign criticizes the new labor laws, emphasizing that large sections of the unorganized workforce, including domestic and gig workers, are devoid of crucial welfare measures.
Shabrin called for an end to manual scavenging and demanded comprehensive reforms, such as permanent government jobs, health insurance, and a separate law for domestic workers. The Youth Congress highlighted the systemic issues plaguing Mumbai, from inadequate public transport to inefficient municipal services, urging locals to join their movement for workers' dignity and rights.
