Somerset's emerging wicketkeeper-batter, James Rew, has been drafted into England's squad for the highly-anticipated one-off Test against Zimbabwe. The 21-year-old steps in following Jordan Cox's withdrawal due to an abdominal muscle injury. Rew earned this call-up after a remarkable County Championship season, boasting an impressive average of 54.7, highlighted by a top score of 152.
Cox was originally selected in the squad but faced another injury setback while nearing a century for Essex at Taunton. Despite retiring hurt, he eventually secured his century, although subsequent scans confirmed his ineligibility for the Zimbabwe Test. Cox's struggle with injuries continued to impede his international debut, following a broken finger injury earlier this year.
James Rew has long been on England's radar, especially after his commendable performances with the Young Lions during the 2022 ICC U19 World Cup. His first-class feats include a prolific 1086 runs at an average of 57.15 during the 2023 County Championship, alongside his impactful white-ball performances. Rew will join the national team at an upcoming training camp as they gear up for their international summer, beginning with the Test match against Zimbabwe at Trent Bridge on May 22.
