Indian chess prodigy, Grandmaster P Iniyan, clinched the prestigious Dole Open International Chess title by defeating Poland's Jan Malek in a tense tie-breaker showdown. The French city of Aix-en-Provence hosted the gripping tournament that saw both players locked in a stalemate with 7.5 points each before the deciding match.
Hailing from Erode in Tamil Nadu, the 22-year-old Iniyan showcased impeccable skill throughout the tournament, remaining undefeated. He secured six victories against international competition from countries including Uzbekistan, Madagascar, Turkey, France, and Poland, along with three draws.
A fierce competitor, Iniyan concluded the nine-game series tied at the top with GM Malek, among the 276 participants from 43 countries. Notably, Iniyan triumphed in his last four games consecutively, and his decisive victory in the second tie-break game with black pieces cemented his championship win with a tally of 1.5-0.5.
