Defending champions NorthEast United FC kicked off their Durand Cup campaign with a resounding 3-1 victory against the Malaysian Armed Forces FT. The match, held at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, witnessed a remarkable performance from Moroccan striker Alaaeddine Ajaraie, who netted a hat-trick.
Ajaraie, last season's top scorer in the ISL, opened the scoring in the 23rd minute following a precise through ball from debutant Andres Rodriguez. He doubled the lead just six minutes later after an exceptional team move. Despite several attempts, the Malaysian Armed Forces struggled to capitalize on their opportunities.
In the 70th minute, Ajaraie sealed the match with a third goal, curling a sublime shot into the bottom corner. Although Mohammad Amir scored for the Malaysians in the 88th minute, it was merely a consolation as NorthEast United firmly controlled proceedings.
