Indian Olympic medalist and world champion javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra is set to begin his title defence at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo. Chopra will participate in the men's javelin throw qualifiers on Wednesday, with the medal round slated for Thursday.

A key attraction of the competition is Chopra's contest against Pakistani arch-rival and reigning Olympic gold medalist Arshad Nadeem. Notably, in 2023, Chopra became the first Indian to clinch a World Championships gold with a throw of 88.17 meters in Budapest, while Nadeem took silver.

This year, Chopra has been in remarkable form, highlighted by victories across various prestigious meets, and a historic performance at the Doha Diamond League where he crossed the 90-meter threshold. Now ranked as world number two, he aims to continue his dominance amidst a field of 37 competitors striving for 12 spots in the finals.
