AFI Raises Concerns: Majority of Indian Athletic Tracks Substandard

The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) has expressed grave concerns over the quality of synthetic athletic tracks across the country. According to Adille Sumariwalla, an AFI spokesperson, the majority of these tracks are substandard, compromising material, construction, and measurements. These concerns were voiced during a press conference on Saturday.

Sumariwalla noted that over 90% of the tracks in India fail to meet the desired standards. He emphasized that the materials used are poor, the construction process is faulty, and the incorrect application of synthetic granules compounds the problem. The substandard use of materials like tyre rubber instead of polyurethane was specifically highlighted as a major issue.

Previously, the AFI had distanced itself from track certification, wary of potential irregularities in the awarding process. However, following directives from World Athletics and after reviewing alarming data presented during a Tokyo meeting, the AFI is set to play a more proactive role in quality assurance. Plans include vetting global vendors and intensifying track testing.
