York City and Rochdale Demand Change in Promotion Rules
York City and Rochdale are advocating for a revision of promotion rules in England's National League. Both teams claim unfairness as only one team can secure automatic promotion. They demand that the National League provides a third promotion spot to enhance fairness, igniting significant debate ahead of their decisive match.
York City and Rochdale are urging a reform in the promotion rules of England's National League, citing the current system as unfair ahead of their crucial title-deciding match. The clubs are contending for a spot in League Two, with only the first-placed team earning an automatic promotion.
Both clubs were involved in last year's playoffs but missed out on promotion, despite having high point totals. York and Rochdale argue the current system undermines competitiveness and fairness, with York having been runners-up while another team with fewer points advanced.
The joint campaign, named 3UP, launched in February 2025, is a rallying cry from 72 clubs for an additional promotion place. This issue continues to gain traction, as exemplified by a delayed match start on November 15 to spotlight the appeal.
