Revamp in Boxing Selection Process for CWG and Asian Games

The Boxing Federation of India (BFI) has announced significant changes to its selection process for the upcoming Commonwealth and Asian Games. This decision comes after directives from the Sports Authority of India (SAI) to enhance transparency and fairness in the evaluation of boxers.

Previously, the selection involved a two-part marking-based assessment, which drew criticism and complaints from boxers over its lack of transparency. In response, the BFI has implemented a revised trial-based system, assembling a five-member panel consisting of the head coach and four judges to evaluate bouts and announce results immediately.

The decision to scrap the criticized marking system follows a meeting between SAI officials, women's head coach Santiago Nieva, and men's head coach CA Kuttappa. The revised selection trial will run from May 13 to 15, 2026, at NS NIS Patiala, ahead of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya.
