Connolly Shines in IPL with Record-Breaking Sixes
Australian cricketer Cooper Connolly set a new IPL record for most sixes by a debutant, surpassing Sanath Jayasuriya's inaugural season achievement. Connolly's performance, though in vain as Punjab Kings fell to RCB, cements his status as a top contender making a significant impact in his IPL journey.
In a thrilling display of power hitting, Australia's rising cricket sensation Cooper Connolly has rewritten IPL history by overtaking Sri Lankan legend Sanath Jayasuriya for the most sixes by a debutant in the league. Playing for Punjab Kings (PBKS), Connolly achieved this milestone against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) on a memorable day. His quickfire 37 off 22 balls propelled him into the record books, boasting three fours and three sixes, with an impressive strike rate of 168.18.
This feat provided a ray of hope amidst a challenging chase of 223 and comes as Connolly continues to lead PBKS's batting charge with a total of 473 runs in 12 innings. His debut IPL season has been marked by a high average of 47.30 and a strike rate of 162.54, including one century and two fifties. Jayasuriya previously held the record from 2008 with 31 sixes during his stint with Mumbai Indians.
In the game, PBKS's decision to bowl first backfired as they failed to capitalize on early breakthroughs. Despite Connolly's efforts and significant contributions from the likes of Marcus Stoinis and Shashank Singh, PBKS ended their innings at 199/8, falling short by 23 runs. RCB, led by strong performances from Virat Kohli, Devdutt Padikkal, and Venkatesh Iyer, secured their spot in the playoffs while PBKS must now rely on external results to keep their playoff hopes alive.
