The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) has stirred controversy by limiting celebrated grappler Vinesh Phogat to competing only in the 50kg category for the Asian Games selection trials. The decision comes amid a continuing stand-off between Phogat and the federation, with the national body receiving no clear communication from her regarding her preferred weight division.
Phogat, a two-time World Championship medalist, previously competed in the 50kg category at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Despite preparing to compete in the 53kg class and training at the Indira Gandhi Stadium, the federation is firm in their stance, ensuring trials adhere strictly to WFI guidelines. In response, 16 female wrestlers have approached the court opposing her direct entry into the trials, arguing they followed a domestic pathway while Phogat's status allowed her a direct route.
The WFI, however, will abide by a Supreme Court ruling permitting Phogat's trial participation. They are also open to observers from the Indian Olympic Association and Sports Ministry. Additionally, an allowance has been made for medalists from the National Open Ranking event at Gonda, including notable grappler Deepak Punia, to participate in the selection process, potentially altering the landscape of the competition.
