Cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar has urged for notable modifications in the Indian Premier League rules, advocating for the elimination of the impact player rule. Speaking at the ESPNcricinfo awards, he outlined ideas aimed at equalizing the competitive edge between batsmen and bowlers.
Introduced in 2023, the impact player rule allows team flexibility in substituting players during matches. However, Tendulkar believes this encourages an imbalance, favoring batsmen due to already batsmen-friendly pitches. He suggests rethinking the powerplay by enabling a bowling powerplay similar to the existing batting one. This would allow the fielding captain to strategically use additional fielding resources.
Moreover, Tendulkar proposes that teams should be allowed to extend a bowler's spell from four to five overs, ensuring greater participation from premier bowlers. This idea shares Tendulkar's foundational belief that top bowlers should be as engaged in the game as the leading batsmen, who often face 20 overs.
