Starlink's Ascending Trajectory in India's Telecom Sector

Starlink's foray into the Indian market has seen a series of pivotal events shaping its trajectory. As early as November 2021, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) instructed Elon Musk's Starlink to halt pre-bookings for satellite internet services, citing licensing issues, setting the stage for regulatory negotiations in the emerging satcom arena.

By 2024, India's telecom regulator, TRAI, initiated comprehensive consultations with industry stakeholders to devise fair methodologies for spectrum assignment. Despite telecom giants like Jio advocating for reforms in spectrum allocation, government officials and industry leaders, including Sunil Bharti Mittal, debated over bidding routes at major conferences like the India Mobile Conference.

In a significant turnaround by March 2025, leading telecom players Jio and Bharti Airtel embraced partnerships with SpaceX to deliver Starlink's services, aligning with the Indian government's administrative stance on satcom spectrum allocation. With the issuance of a Letter of Intent to Starlink by the DoT in May 2025, Starlink is poised to transform India's internet landscape.
