China Media Group, the parent company of China's leading broadcaster CCTV, has successfully secured broadcasting rights for the World Cup, as reported by local media sources on Friday. However, key details such as the financial terms and whether the deal covers future tournaments remain undisclosed.
Traditionally, CCTV has clinched World Cup broadcasting rights well ahead of the tournaments, allowing them to launch thorough promotional campaigns and sponsor-driven advertisements well in advance. Despite this tradition, CCTV has yet to comment, raising questions about the terms of the current arrangement.
FIFA announced earlier this month that broadcasting agreements were finalized in over 175 territories. With negotiations still ongoing in China, FIFA's Secretary General Mattias Grafstrom's recent visit to Beijing and meeting with Chinese Football Association head Song Kai suggest that an official deal might soon be confirmed.
