Indra Hang Subba, Sikkim's lone Lok Sabha MP, has formally requested the Ministry of Education to incorporate Rai, Sherpa, Tamang, and Gurung languages as optional second languages in classes 11 and 12 of CBSE-affiliated schools in Sikkim.
The plea, supported by prominent community associations, emphasizes the cultural, educational, and constitutional importance of these languages, already part of the CBSE curriculum for classes 9 and 10.
Subba argues that the move is in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, promoting multilingualism and honoring Article 29 of the Constitution. He has urged the ministry to initiate this change starting from the 2025-26 academic session.
