Delhi University has announced that its colleges and institutions must operate from 8 am to 8 pm, aiming for optimal resource utilization. The decision was made during an Executive Council meeting on July 12, as stated in a directive dated July 31.
This shift comes as the university introduces students to the fourth year under the Four-Year Undergraduate Programme. Faculty members have expressed worries about potential strains on existing infrastructure and workforce capabilities.
Among the critics, associate professor Rudrashish Chakraborty, labeled the directive as 'draconian,' arguing that it imposes an unreasonable burden on teachers and students. Concerns have also been raised about the safety of commuting during early and late hours.
