The Maharashtra government is revolutionizing library funding by directly depositing grants into the bank accounts of over 10,000 recognized public libraries. Higher and Technical Education Minister Chandrakant Patil announced this landmark move on Friday.

According to Patil, public libraries play a crucial role in fostering a reading culture across society. Previously, grants were disbursed bi-annually through district library officers, a process often marred by delays. In response, the ministry, in collaboration with the Directorate of Libraries, has developed a computerized Library Grant Management System to ensure transparency and timeliness in fund allocation.

As per the government's resolution dated September 12, 2025, the first installment, amounting to Rs 80.53 crore, is already being credited directly into the accounts of 10,546 public libraries, marking a significant step forward in enhancing library services in the state.
