The Government has announced the appointment of Andrew Szusterman to the Radio New Zealand (RNZ) Board of Governors, effective from 1 October 2025, in a move designed to strengthen the broadcaster’s leadership as it navigates rapid changes in the media landscape.

The announcement was made by Minister for Media and Communications Paul Goldsmith, who said Szusterman’s extensive industry background would bring valuable expertise to the Board.

A Seasoned Media Executive

Szusterman has built a long career in television, commercial radio, and digital platforms in both New Zealand and overseas. His experience spans senior leadership positions, content development, and digital transformation strategies—areas that are increasingly important as public broadcasters adapt to shifts in audience behaviour and consumption.

“Mr Szusterman is an experienced media executive with extensive experience across television, commercial radio, and digital platforms. His career demonstrates a deep understanding of audience engagement and the evolving media landscape, which will be relevant to RNZ as it adapts to changing audience behaviours,” Minister Goldsmith said.

Challenges and Opportunities for RNZ

RNZ, as New Zealand’s publicly funded broadcaster, plays a critical role in providing independent journalism, cultural programming, and nationwide radio services. However, it faces growing challenges as audiences shift toward digital platforms, younger generations consume content differently, and commercial pressures reshape the media industry.

Szusterman’s appointment is expected to support RNZ in:

  • Strengthening digital strategy to reach new and diverse audiences.

  • Maintaining editorial independence while adapting to government funding priorities.

  • Balancing traditional broadcasting with digital innovation, ensuring RNZ remains relevant in a crowded media market.

Government’s Media Strategy

The appointment also comes at a time when the Government is reviewing its broader approach to public broadcasting and media sustainability. Ministers have signalled the importance of maintaining trusted, independent public service broadcasting while ensuring taxpayer investment delivers value in a fast-changing environment.

With commercial broadcasters under financial strain and competition from international streaming services intensifying, RNZ’s ability to remain competitive and innovative will be a key priority for its Board in the years ahead.

Looking Ahead

Szusterman will join other Board members tasked with guiding RNZ’s strategic direction, safeguarding its editorial independence, and ensuring it continues to deliver on its public service mandate.

His appointment reflects the Government’s recognition of the need for strong leadership in steering RNZ through a period of transition, where technology, funding models, and audience expectations are all shifting rapidly.

The Minister expressed confidence that Szusterman’s blend of commercial acumen and content expertise will help RNZ remain a trusted and relevant part of New Zealand’s media ecosystem.
