A Judicial Inquiry Committee's 64-page report has brought allegations of serious misconduct against Justice Yashwant Varma to light. Formerly linked with Delhi High Court, Varma is now at Allahabad High Court. The committee found credible evidence against him following the discovery of burnt currency at his residence.

Crafted by Chief Justices Sheel Nagu, GS Sandhawalia, and Justice Anu Sivaraman, the report critically examines Varma's conduct, stating he failed to maintain the 'Universally Accepted Values of Judicial Life'. The incident's crux was the early hours recovery of partially burned cash on March 15, from a storeroom at 30 Tughlak Crescent, managed by Varma.

Relying on witness accounts and electronic surveillance, the panel inferred covert removal of the cash occurred with Varma's awareness. This has raised questions about his silence on the matter. Additionally, his quick acquiescence to a transfer order on March 20, without inquiry, further sparked judicial community concerns.

The report suggested that such uncharacteristic behavior signals deeper issues, supported by testimonies from 55 witnesses, including Varma. Though a declaration of guilt was not made, the committee recommended steps towards Varma's removal, a rare and notable event in Indian judicial proceedings.
