A peaceful march organized by the All Tawang District Students' Union (ATDSU) unfolded in Tawang, urging the Indian government to confer the Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian honor, upon the Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama. This procession was coordinated with monastic communities, elder citizens, youth groups, and notable public figures from the Monyul region. The march commenced at Cham-leng near the Tawang Monastery and concluded at Buddha Park, drawing participation from hundreds of monks, students, residents, and dignitaries carrying banners of gratitude, chanting prayers for peace and harmony.
Prominent Buddhist leaders such as Shedling Tulku Thupten Tender Rinpoche La, Rikya Lhavoe Rinpoche, Tulku Tenzin Gyurmey, and Lhundup Choesang were also in attendance. In a media statement, Advocate Tesring Tashi, General Secretary of ATDSU and the march's organizing committee chairman, remarked, "His Holiness the Dalai Lama is more than a religious figure. He is our moral compass, our spiritual father, and a global symbol of peace and compassion. Awarding him the Bharat Ratna would honor not just the man but the values that define our civilization."
Advocate Tashi accentuated the historical bond between the Monpa people and the Dalai Lama's institution, pointing to the 5th Dalai Lama's authorization of the Tawang Monastery in 1680. He fondly recalled the moment in 1959 when the Dalai Lama entered India via Tawang during his escape from persecution in Tibet, a moment still profoundly felt in the local community. "For over six decades, the Dalai Lama has called India his home," Tashi stated. He further noted the leader's humble life and his persistent promotion of India's ancient wisdom globally, integrating modern science with Indian philosophy, thus enhancing India's moral stature worldwide.
The ATDSU stressed that granting the Dalai Lama the Bharat Ratna would not only be a gesture of gratitude but a reflection of India's unwavering commitment to peace, non-violence, and universal brotherhood. "This recognition is long overdue," noted Advocate Tashi. He also appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to consider this recommendation, suggesting that such an honor would uplift both Tibetan and Monpa communities and serve as an inspiration to the nation and the world.
