Punjab's Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains faced religious censure on Wednesday, appearing before the Sri Akal Takht Sahib after being found guilty of misconduct tied to an event in Srinagar honoring Guru Tegh Bahadur's martyrdom.
The government-backed event drew criticism for including dance performances, deemed inappropriate by the Sikh clergy. Responding to global grievances, Bains appeared before the top religious seat of Sikhism, acknowledging his error and accepting the religious reproach. Expressing remorse in a post on X, he emphasized the importance of redemption and vowed to undertake a sacred excursion to key gurdwaras as part of his sentence.
Religious leaders also voiced concerns over political entities exploiting the Akal Takht's name for personal gains, calling for unity amidst various Sikh factions. The clergy highlighted urgent issues such as the protection of Sikh traditions and the impact of modern technology.
