The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), in collaboration with the Department of Health Research (DHR), launched a nationwide initiative titled S.H.I.N.E. - Science, Health and Innovation for Nextgen Explorers, in response to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's appeal for students to experience a day as a scientist.
On August 7-8, over 13,000 high school students from 300 schools in 39 districts across 16 states and union territories participated in this open day event. The initiative aimed to introduce them to health and biomedical research and encourage careers in science, supporting India's goal of becoming a developed nation by 2047. Rajiv Bahl, DHR Secretary and ICMR Director General, highlighted the importance of fostering scientific curiosity and engaged the students by encouraging them to think like scientists.
The students participated in interactive activities including lab tours, research exhibitions, and live demonstrations under the guidance of a mascot, Dr. Curio. They also interacted with ICMR scientists and watched films showcasing key initiatives like Covaxin development and TB elimination. The event coincided with the 104th birth anniversary of esteemed medical scientist Dr. Vulimiri Ramalingaswami, enhancing its significance and reaffirming ICMR's commitment to engaging young minds.
