The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, greenlit a substantial Rs 12,000 crore subsidy under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) for 2025-26, offering financial relief to 10.33 crore households. The decision reflects the government's commitment to support low-income women with free LPG connections nationwide.
Initiated in May 2016, PMUY has steadily expanded, providing 10.33 crore LPG connections across India by July 2025. The renewed subsidy promise includes Rs 300 per 14.2 kg cylinder for up to 9 refills annually, ensuring continued support for eligible beneficiaries.
Given that India imports approximately 60 percent of its LPG, this move underscores a strategic effort to balance domestic needs with energy dependencies, while fostering socio-economic progress for women and their families.
