SKM Condemns Duty-Free Cotton Imports, Citing Farmer Hardships
The Samyukt Kisan Morcha criticized the government's decision to allow duty-free cotton imports, claiming it threatens domestic farmers' livelihoods. The cotton import duty exemption, valid until September 30, aims to benefit the textile sector. However, SKM argues it may depress local cotton prices, exacerbating farmers' financial struggles.

The Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) has voiced strong opposition to the recent government decision to permit duty-free import of raw cotton until September 30, labeling it a potential disaster for India's cotton farmers.
In an official statement, the collective of farmer unions accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of engaging in "duplicity and betrayal," asserting that the move could severely compromise the livelihoods of cotton farmers nationwide.
The SKM contends that eliminating import duties could lead to a decline in domestic cotton prices, further aggravating the economic pressures on farmers. This policy change comes after the withdrawal of central farm laws in December 2021, which had sparked significant protest.
