Hungarian Election Winner Calls for Quick Action on Druzhba Pipeline and PAKS Project
In a post-election conference, Hungary's Peter Magyar urged Ukraine to reopen the Druzhba pipeline and called on Russia to resume oil exports. He emphasized the need to review financing for the PAKS nuclear plant project, a symbol of Hungary-Russia relations, for potential restructuring or refinancing.
In a significant political development, Hungarian election victor Peter Magyar has urged Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy to expedite the reopening of the Druzhba pipeline. Magyar's call came as he pushed for the restoration of Russian oil shipments through the crucial conduit, which was closed earlier this year following a reported attack.
The closure has resulted in a diplomatic spat involving Hungary's outgoing government and Slovakia, both entangled with Ukraine over the disruption of Russian oil. Magyar argues that, if operational, Ukraine should fulfill its promise of reopening the pipeline.
Magyar also spotlighted the PAKS nuclear power plant expansion, questioning the financial terms of its Russian-backed loan. He advocates exploring better financing options for this multi-billion euro project, symbolizing Hungary's tight-knit energy relationship with Russia.
