US-India Nuclear Partnership: A New Era of Cooperation

The US Energy Secretary, Chris Wright, has briefed a delegation of senior executives from the American nuclear industry about their upcoming visit to India. The delegation aims to explore areas of cooperation following India's decision to open its nuclear sector to private players. This visit marks a significant step in enhancing bilateral ties between the two nations.

A 20-member team from the US nuclear industry will meet with Indian government officials and private-sector leaders keen on exploring opportunities in India's civil nuclear sector. This comes after the introduction of the SHANTI law that has transformed the landscape for nuclear cooperation in India.

As part of the U.S-India Strategic Partnership Forum, the delegation's visit underscores the potential for joint project opportunities. India's goal to reach 100 GW of nuclear capacity by 2047 is seen as a significant commercial opportunity for US firms. On both sides, efforts are underway to accelerate projects, including small modular reactors, which are touted as the future of nuclear power.
