India's Urgent Call to Action: Tackling Hepatitis B
Despite decades of interventions, Hepatitis B virus (HBV) remains prevalent in India. AIIMS experts emphasize the need for improved epidemiological data, strengthened surveillance, and robust health strategies. India's battle with Hepatitis B continues as experts from AIIMS underscore the need for better data and healthcare strategies. The prevalence of Hepatitis B remains high, signaling a slow pace towards elimination. While some strides have been made, there are still gaps in diagnosis and treatment rates that need urgent attention.
The National Viral Hepatitis Control Program, launched in 2018, has introduced measures like vaccination and blood screening. However, birth dose vaccination coverage stands at 63%, and treatment rates at zero. A recent study in Puducherry reveals a 2.5% prevalence rate, highlighting the need for enhanced infection control and public health strategies.
Experts emphasize that, as a global health leader, India must prioritize Hepatitis B to protect future generations. They also call for more accurate data to guide public health efforts. Despite efforts, challenges like limited awareness and fragmented surveillance systems persist, hindering the fight against HBV.
