Maharashtra's Decision Looms Over Abu Salem's Fate

The Maharashtra government is contemplating a proposal regarding the early release of extradited gangster Abu Salem, as conveyed to the Bombay High Court. A decision from the state's home department is expected imminently.

Salem, who has been incarcerated for 19 years since his extradition from Portugal in 2005, argued through his petition that considering remission for good behavior, he should qualify for release. He appealed to the court highlighting the assurance from India that he would not face execution or serve more than 25 years in prison.

The state, in its affidavits, highlighted Salem's convictions, including the 1993 Mumbai bomb blasts, and indicated that discussions are ongoing. The case will be further examined in June, as the court awaits the government's final decision.
