The Indian central government has taken a crucial step in national defense by empowering the Army Chief to mobilize the Territorial Army (TA). This decision aims to bolster the regular Army amidst ongoing military tensions with Pakistan. The move, announced by the Ministry of Defence, will be in effect for three years from February 10, 2025, to February 09, 2028.
The 75-year-old TA, integrated with the regular Army, has a legacy of significant contributions during times of war and humanitarian efforts. The new directive empowers the Chief of the Army Staff to call upon every officer and enrolled person in the TA, under Rule 33 of the Territorial Army Rule of 1948, to support regular Army operations as necessary.
The government plans to embody 14 out of 32 existing Infantry Battalions (Territorial Army) across various command areas, ensuring budgetary provisions for their deployment. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh held a comprehensive review of the national security scenario following recent conflicts with Pakistan, reflecting a robust stance on military preparedness.
