Six years have passed since the unsettling Pollachi sexual assault and extortion case shocked the nation, culminating in the sentencing of nine individuals to 'life imprisonment till death' by a Mahila Court. This ruling provided a sense of closure to many as justice was served on Tuesday.
Judge R Nandhini Devi presided over the case, instructing the convicts to compensate the eight victims with Rs 85 lakh. The nine men, including former AIADMK functionary K Arulanantham, were convicted on several charges, such as gang rape and extortion, as delineated in the Indian Penal Code. Various life terms, between one and five, were assigned based on the defendants' culpability in the crimes committed between 2016 and 2018.
The verdict was praised for its just conclusion and was underscored by the CBI's thorough and diligent investigation. Remarkably, none of the 48 witnesses faltered during the trial, bolstering the prosecution's case. This resolution resonated throughout Tamil Nadu, where the case had previously evoked widespread outrage and demands for accountability.
